Unofficial official Elf on the Shelf rules are meant to help you make the most out of your elf Christmas traditions and have fun. We call it #ExtremeElfFun. One official rule is that the elf is to be moved to a different location in your house every night. While your children are asleep, the elf gets to work. This is to create the illusion that every night, the elf is traveling back to the North Pole. He reports to Santa about how well your kids behaved each day. You see how well this can work in your favor – right?
Secondly, children are never supposed to touch the elf, or else he’ll lose his “magic.” If your kids accidentally touch him (there have been some major freak-outs) there’s several options to restore the Christmas magic. See what to do here.
Have older kids and want to keep them involved with the family tradition? We’ve got tips and ideas for you here.
Unofficial Official Elf on the Shelf Rules
- The main rule of Elf club is . . . there is no Elf club! Well, we have an unofficial official Elf club where you can share your fun pics and ideas. Just join our new group Extreme Christmas Savings 2017 HERE. Search hashtag #ExtremeElfFun. You can leave a picture or comment in the comments there to inspire others, or get new ideas.
- The other main rule of Elf club is . . . there are no rules! Sure, there is a background story and they say kids can’t touch the Elf or he’ll lose his magic; But unofficial official rules say, you can use any elf, as we’ve established. Additionally, you can set your own rules. Make it work any way that is best for you. If your elf is a rebel at heart – we say go for it and change the official Elf on the Shelf rules to suit your family!
- Knock-off Elves are fine. Use what you have or pick up any old knock-off elf you think is cute. Although, the official Elf on the Shelf can be found very reasonably these days. Often, they go on sale and you can pick them up anywhere from $12 – $29 (like these cutie elves). Also, you can buy the book separately and budget for a different time if need be.
- It’s supposed to be FUN! The Elf tradition shouldn’t be something that causes more stress. It’s supposed to be an enjoyable family tradition that brings you together and fuels the imagination – as well as the Christmas spirit. Don’t start too soon. When you get the tree up is usually a good time. If you’re sticking to the original story, your elf is supposed to move to a different location each night. When he returns from reporting to Santa each night, he’s up to something new at your house. This can lead to some fun and creative ideas for Elf on the Shelf displays.
- Even the Elf on the Shelf needs a day off once in awhile! Seriously, there’s no need to stress out if you forget to move the elf. Just hide him, and let the kids know he’s on vacation. Also, sometimes Santa needs his help a little longer. There is simply NO NEED to ruin the fun by stressing out over it.
- Keep it simple. Elf is funny, he’s full of mischievous tricks, but if you are constantly trying to be more creative than the year before, never have a day off, and abide by strict rules . . . well, some of the magic may disappear! So, keep it simple – not every day has to be an unbelievable, over the top elf moment! Get some simple and fun ideas for your Scout Elf here.
